What Makes A Client “High-Quality”?

Freelance influencers and coaches say it all the time.

“You just need to land a few high-quality clients to build a successful and thriving business!”

And, on first glance, this sounds like super great advice,

But if you are new to freelancing, you kind of just get left wondering…

OK, but what do you mean by high-quality client???

High-quality clients are different for everyone

This is exactly how I felt when I was first starting out, trying to land any client who would have me on Upwork.

At that time, I was so eager to prove myself and land my first paying client, I didn’t really know what to expect or how to tell if who I was working with was a good fit.

But, as I became more established as a writer and developed a few consistent, long-term clients, I naturally started to notice habits and practices that separate an OK client from a great and amazing one.

But, because every freelancer is different, what you think makes a client great may be very different from what someone else is looking for — and as a result, knowing that specifically makes a client “great” is subjective.

So, what makes a client high-quality to you? I honestly am not sure.

But I do know that for me, I love working with clients who:

My personal criteria for high-quality clients

#1 — Respond to my questions and requests in a timely manner

It’s a simple ask, but you would be surprised at how many clients struggle to take the time to respond to their contractors.

And listen, I know things get busy (I get busy too!), but my favourite clients are the ones who, even when they are slammed, take the time to let me know when I can expect to hear from them next.

It’s a simple gesture that makes a huge difference — and it’s a courtesy I strive to extend back to my clients as well.

#2 — Want me to be a more integral part of the team

It is very common for freelancers to be left on the outside of large-scale project planning because they often aren’t viewed as an “official” member of the team.

One of my favourite clients to work with has never treated me this way — and actually has gone as far as to introduce me to other members of her team so I can be a more helpful, collaborative partner.

It has made a world of difference for my level of insight into projects, and it also makes me feel more valued and respected, which is a win-win!

#3 — Trust my experience and knowledge

There is nothing more refreshing than a freelance client who not only wants my input and opinions on a project or strategy, but also trusts my experience and is willing to incorporate my ideas into their plan.

#4 — Have a great sense of humor

Finally, I love clients that I can get onto casual speaking terms with.

Obviously, this is not a requirement I have for brand new or one-off clients, but when I build a long-term working relationship with a client, I enjoy being able to be friendly and casual when we work together.

It’s time to define your own high-quality client

These are just a few criteria I have developed over the past few years of my writing career. What things do you look for in a great client?
