What If You Could Read Your Client’s Mind?

I am not one for superstition or folklore…

Unless we are talking about the iconic 2020 Taylor Swift album, of course.

But I do firmly believe in a freelancer’s ability to “read the minds” of their potential customers, making them stand out from the laundry list of other potential freelancers.

It’s not magic, it’s strategy

No matter your level of experience, accessing this otherworldly power is easier than you may think — and it is the key to branding yourself as a valuable asset to any project.

To remove the smoke and mirrors surrounding your future clients, you need to do two essential things as part of your work portfolio and pitch:

Highlight your niche and communicate your experience and knowledge

This isn’t magic or luck. This is calculated work that pays off.

Who would you choose?

Here’s an example to prove my point:

Put yourself in the shoes of a client looking to hire a freelancer. Which candidate would you want to learn more about?

Candidate 1:

A veteran freelancer with 10+ years in the field. They write a professional and polite pitch, and include high-quality samples of their work about a few random topics not related to the niche of the project.

Candidate 2:

A newer freelancer with a relatively small body of work. They write a compelling pitch that directly speaks to your underlying problem, including additional details about some pain points in your industry that you thought no one else knew about. Their work samples include content written about your exact niche.

I am hoping (based on the structure and context of this article) that it is very clear that the second candidate has a much stronger value-add to this client — even though they are less experienced.

Use your skills and training to land great clients

If you take anything away from this blog, I hope it is this: Use your medical training and experience to your advantage.

It sets you apart from your peers and allows you to better connect with high-quality clients.

It’s time to become like candidate two EVERY TIME you pitch a new client. And I’m more than excited to help you tap into your own crystal ball of knowledge.

What area of your freelancing career could use the most help? Let me know in the comments.
