The Upwork Profile Title: Self-Marketing 101
We only get a few moments of a client’s attention to make a good impression.
And oftentimes, something as simple as how you describe yourself can make or break how a potential client feels about you at first glance.
On Upwork, this is particularly true.
Because it is literally a platform filled with skilled professionals vying to work for the same clients as you.
So, what can you do to immediately stand out as a strong candidate?
Write a compelling and specific Upwork title that sells who you are and what you do, in 70 characters or less.
Why your Upwork profile title matters
Consider your Upwork profile title like a punchy hook to a blog article — you want to lure in potential clients with something short, sweet, and engaging.
When done correctly, this title will draw attention to your profile, showing off your particular set of niche-specific skills that will make high-quality clients immediately click to learn more.
But, this is often easier said than done.
With this in mind (and learned from the past 3 years I have spent on Upwork), here are my top tips for creating a powerful profile title in minutes:
The 3 steps you needs to follow to write a compelling Upwork profile title
#1 — Avoid listing your skills or services
Listing your skills (even if they are all 100% true and impressive) is boring and overdone on Upwork.
While it is tempting to want to show off all of the amazing value you can provide your clients, I strongly encourage you to get a bit more creative with your title.
Creating an easy-to-read sentence as your title will build instant rapport with your potential clients, while also giving the opportunity to highlight small details about your specialty and personality, which is always a win.
#2 — Include descriptive language
What sounds better:
Medical Content Writer or Engaging & Modern Medical Content Writer?
Adding a few thoughtful (and true) adjectives to your title is a great way to stand out, while also branding the unique approach to medical writing you provide your clients.
#3 — Show your niche upfront
Labeling yourself as “a medical writer” is essentially shooting yourself in the foot before you even start.
Set yourself up for success by directly mentioning your specialty and niche in your title to let your clients know why you are different and worth working with.
Do you do regulatory writing, blog articles, or social media content? Do you write about a specific medical niche? What languages do you create content in?
The power of a well-crafted title
Word your title to include these attributes (without turning it into a list) — and BOOM.
You instantly just gained authority in the eyes of your clients, all within the first second of them scrolling across your profile.
Talk about an instant upgrade to your online professional presence!
All of this being said, you are allowed to (and I encourage you to) play around with the wording of your Upwork profile title.
After you read this article, I challenge you to write an option you like in 5 mins or less and use it for a month.
Next month, try changing it up, and see how potential clients respond to your profile.
As time goes on, you will be able to fine-tune your wording to better match your services — so don’t feel like you need to get it perfect on the first try.
Hope this helps!
